Dachshunds are one of the most lovable breeds in the canine kingdom, known for their curiosity, love of play and boundless energy. They are mischievous and are quite capable in getting away with their crazy antics, especially when they're young. But they can be extremely loyal and have remained such a popular breed because of their many wonderful characteristics. But dachshund lovers who wish to train their beloved friend also face a very tough task. Dachshunds are naturally stubborn and are considered as one of the most difficult breeds to teach. As such, dachshund puppy training must be carried out with a lot of love, firmness and patience.
Starting dachshund puppy training
When beginning the training, arm yourself with lots of patience, consistency, firmness and above all, love. Keep in mind that your puppy is an animal with different instincts and a different way of assessing things. Your dog needs to be able to look at you and see a pack leader. If he doesn't, you can be sure that with the dachshund's take-charge personality, he will attempt (and emerge) the dominant dog.
Exercising your dog
Dachshunds have to be active to help them spend their excess energies and you can help them do this by taking them out for walks. Use a puppy leash to keep them where they need to be. If you prefer, use either a harness or a retractable leash to gain more control.
House breaking
Your puppy will need to relieve himself about 6 times a day. After a meal, bring your puppy outside to eliminate but bring him to the area where you'd like him to do it. If he does, give him lots of praise. If you keep your puppy in a kennel crate, do the same in the morning and then allow him to play prior to his first meal. Repeat the elimination exercise and then place the puppy inside the crate again. About an hour later, bring him out to eliminate. He will learn over time that he should do his business when taken out.
Do not force the puppy to eliminate, though. If he doesn't just bring him back in, wait a while and then bring him back again. Repeat this process until he is housebroken. The process holds true even for newspaper training indoors.
Obedience training
Train your puppy using short sessions of 10 to 15 minutes but do it frequently, say 2 to 3 times each day. Always reinforce good behavior with praise or treats and be firm about bad behavior. In time, with this dachshund puppy training your dog will learn all the positive behaviors you want it to acquire.
