Puppy Toilet Training - Keys To Success

Wednesday, March 2, 2011

Learning how to train your new puppy is only half the fun. You need to know some basic puppy behavior, especially when it involves puppy toilet training. It will save you and your puppy a lot of frustration and you will both be so happy when you get this one right. It can be done very quickly and almost effortlessly using good puppy training techniques and love.

Think of your puppy like you would a baby. They have a small bladder, no bowel control and limited communication skills. A puppy will grow much faster than a baby but, they will both learn to master these skills. They both want to get what they want and the thing they want most is to see your smiling face. They will both love to explore and have short attention spans, especially if things look interesting.

1. Take your puppy out about every hour when he is not sleeping. Ask him in an excited voice if he has to go potty, put on a leash and take him outside. Tell him again in an excited voice and let him find the perfect spot. This will help get him used to a leash and collar too. After he has gone, praise him and give him a small treat right there on the spot.

2. Animals like to sleep in clean areas, yes your puppy is an animal but he is your baby animal. Even in the wild animals do not go to the bathroom where they sleep, I don't think. Using a portable kennel or indoor crate can be an invaluable tool during the puppy toilet training phase of training.

3. A puppy will do best if he is on a feeding schedule. Discuss a healthy feeding routine for your puppy with your veterinarian. Leaving bowls of food and water within reach can undermine even your best puppy toilet training efforts.

4. An older puppy or adult dog can be house broken the same way. If your dog wasn't a house dog, was abused or just never trained, you can use the exact same methods that you would for a puppy. The adult dog should not need to go out as often as a puppy and their feeding schedule will be different.

5. You will most likely encounter an accident or two in the house. Keep your puppy or dog in your sight and be sure to take him outside often. The portable kennel or puppy crate is especially helpful here especially if you have to leave them and go to work. Please do not over use these kennels or crates. Keep your puppy or dog out of them as much as you can while you are at home.

When you discover your puppy has had an accident inside the house, clean it up immediately. A dog will be drawn to an area that has been used before. Find a good spot cleaner especially formulated for pet odors, or you can make your own. You can probably find a recipe that calls for ingredients you already have, some cleaners can imitate the smell of animal urine.
