Maintain Routine in Feeding While Dog Potty Training

Wednesday, March 2, 2011

Puppy toilet training is a must as if you let this slid the brain of an adult dog will have deemed destroying your house as accepted normal behavior. Also the adult dog will be under stress as it doesn't understand why its owner is suddenly cross with him.

An elderly neighbor, unable to handle his pet, had decided to give the dog away. I took it off his hands. The dog was fully grown and was a nightmare to look after.

Basic dog training is to reward the animal when it does something right and therefore entice it to continue this behavior. It is much harder to communicate to a adult dog that it's doing something wrong when it doesn't understand how to behave differently.

The dog, having never been house trained, was accustomed to it being a free for all in all the rooms of my home and stopping this behavior was going to take a lot of patience and work.

I thought I'd start by helping the dog feel comfortable being around me and help him to trust that I was his friend. Dogs want to please those that love them and respond better when they are given attention.

I found a make shift bed that was just the right size for him. Not too big as to confuse but not too to be cramped or cruel.

After I fed him his dinner, which always assured he was in a good and receptive mood, I'd take him out to the garden to show him it was ok to go to the toilet here.

Adult dogs respond well to repeated actions. Taking your dog to a specific area builds the association in his mind until it becomes his natural territory.

When your dog is being taught his special place to pee don't dispose of the evidence too thoroughly until his used to it. This way the dog's nose will lead the way as he's familiar with his own scent.

Repetition is the key. When ordering your dog to do his business uses the same language each time or he will not understand.

A dog's nose is very sensitive. If your dog has an accident in the house and you don't clean it thoroughly it can pick up on that lingering scent and associate it with where to relieve itself.

Ensure that every trace of excretion is removed and that the smell is masked by strong antibacterial fluids.

I spoke before of the importance of finding a secure bed for your dog where he feels safe.

Dogs will find areas where they are safe and comfortable and will return to them. Show your bed where to sleep and that becomes they bed area. They will choose another area to go to the toilet. They are creatures of habit.

After your dog slept your first course of action is to re-familiarize him with where you want him to relieve himself.

Being consistent in your approach will help your dog learn over time that your house is not a canine lavatory but outside is permissible.

To finish up, just like drinking too much coffee or a late night feast will have us up and running to the toilet in the early hours, feeding your dog late at night might cause accidents and make him uncomfortable in his own bed.

Everything is possible if you're willing to work with your pet and not against him. He will learn from you and respond to you and soon will be running outside every time he needs a rest stop. Just be sure to praise his good behavior and show him lots of affection as like a child. He learns from your attitude and example.
