Dog potty training is a nightmare. When you get a new puppy or a just a new dog that hasn't ever been potty trained properly, it can make you tear your hair out and wonder why your gorgeous new pet is ruining your carpets and won't pay any attention to what you're telling him.
Thankfully, help is at hand. Dog potty training is just like any other aspect of dog training - once you get the general techniques down, he's be potty trained in no time. Here's a few tips for speeding up the process.
#1 - He'll tell you when he needs to go. If you see your dog scratching in corners, running around a closed room looking for something that isn't there, digging at the carpet or whimpering at you, he needs to go.
When that happens, take him to the litter tray if you've got one, or if you're going straight for the outdoors, take him to the flower beds (or wherever you want him to go!).
#2 - Leave him in private to go about his business. It's important that you let him go in private, or he might pretend that he doesn't need to, only to go sneakily behind the couch later on. As silly as it might sound, dogs do get embarrassed, and the worst thing you can do is have him associate toilets with embarrassment - then he'll stop telling you he needs to go, and instead start doing it indoors. That's not what you want when you're potty training your dog!
#3 - Praise him when he comes back. If he's used the appropriate litter tray or flower bed, make sure you reward him for being good. Dog potty training is all about positive reinforcement of good behaviour, so make sure he knows you're pleased with him.
Of course, the reverse is also true - if he's done it in the wrong place, show him where he's done it and give him a firm "No!". Don't smack him or rub his nose in it, that won't teach him anything. Just stick to the "No", then take him to the correct place.
If you can see that he's about to go somewhere you don't want him to, don't throw things at him or smack him - use a water spritzer to give him a quick squirt. That'll distract him enough that he won't go, and then you can take him to correct place.
