Golden Retriever Puppy Training - Simple Steps to Follow When Training Yourself

Tuesday, March 15, 2011

The Golden Retriever was bred around the 1800's in Great Britain, for the purpose of game retrieving. Golden Retriever puppy training was already rampant by that time as they use the dogs both for retrieving and hunting. Today, Golden Retrievers are seen to serve for a variety of purpose to their owners: guide dogs, watch dogs, companion dogs, service dogs and field trials.

The Golden Retriever is best described as lovable and cheerful. This type of dog is eager to make their owners happy at all times and training is generally straight forward. They love being with other animals and with kids. Their sweet nature makes them the perfect family pet. While they normally love everyone, they are watchful of their owners when around strangers.

They have almost an unlimited supply of energy, so activities that are perfect for them are endurance type of activities. If left on their own for a while or if separated from it's family members, retrievers can become troublesome or destructive. These dogs are at their best when provided with tasks to do like retrieving, hunting or performing activities that will involve their capacity to think smartly. Golden Retrievers are excellent swimmers and dock jumpers, so there is a good change they will jump into the water when you are anywhere near it.

To ensure proper Puppy Training, start taking them to active exercises as early as 2 month-old with the following:

1. Daily routines. Teach and train the puppies to get his food and water dishes from where these are located, frequency and what time of the day he needs to eat (morning, early afternoon and evening), where his bed and bathroom are, where his toys are kept and what routes should be taken to walk or run back home.

2. Correction words. Teach the Golden Retrievers what the word "No" means and what are the things they should stop doing when they hear the word.

3. Praise words. Praise words make them feel great. Acknowledge the good deeds and let him know that the word "good" is a form of recognition.

4. Crate training. These probably would be the pillar of his future jumping and active training.

5. Housebreaking. You should immediately introduce him to his bathroom spot, but a puppy of 2-3 months old is still an infant, so it will be several months before his internal organs are developed enough for dependability.

6. Acceptance of being handled. The puppies should also be trained to follow rules and accept that they have to follow orders from the owner. But, love and care should be included too, as always.

7. Gentleness. Teach him that the meaning of the word "easy" means no biting or calm down.

After they have celebrated their 3rd month, it's time for more advanced training.

Teach them to:
1. lie down
2. stay lying down for up to 30 minutes
3. look directly at you when you say his name
4. recognize his name and come to you as you call him
5. teach him to be patient and wait outside the door until he is allowed to go in
6. walk on the leash without pulling
7. stop barking when you say "quiet"
8. interact politely with strangers and other animals
9. give up whatever is in his mouth with the words "give" or "drop"

Golden Retriever puppy training, just like any other teaching experience, would require a great deal of patience and commitment.
