Boxer Puppy Training - The Right Way to Train a Boxer

Tuesday, March 15, 2011

Boxer puppy training deserves a mention of its' own, because these dogs are very unique. They are certainly bigger and stronger than most dogs so they very frequently are put work in search and rescue or police capacities.

However, despite their fierce and strong appearance, they actually make affectionate and good pets. They are quite smart and they tend to pick up on what you are teaching the quickly. They are often found in dog obedience competitions as they show a capacity to do many tricks.

What to avoid

However, don't try training puppies prior to being 3 weeks old since they will not be advanced enough to learn anything new.

Also remember that boxers don't tend to mesh well with very young kids, but by and large they do work well with older kids. If your kids are very young make sure there is an adult present if they are with the dogs.

Before training...

One thing to consider doing is playing with them just prior to training, because this will wear them out slightly; this is good because it means they will listen better. They tend to be very hyper animals, and by not having quite as much energy they will be more apt to listen.

Make them sociable

An important part of boxer puppy training is to get them acclimated to being around other canines and humans at as young an age as possible, which will tend to help them be more friendly to visitors. They tend to be a very aggressive breed of dog and failing to do this step can make them very mean with those they don't know.

Of course, you don't want to completely eliminate their natural guard dog instincts, as this is their strong suit. However, you also don't want them going nuts at every stranger who comes in.

Remember that the rules don't change much with boxer dogs. In other words, the training will really stay largely the same for them as any other kind of dog.

Consistency is key

As with any dog being consistent in their day to day lives in enforcing the boxer puppy training is critical. In other words, if it's okay for them to jump on the couch sometimes then it needs to be okay all the time, and vice versa. Otherwise they will become confused by the mixed signals you are sending them.
