All dogs and puppies require training and most will learn easily if their owner or trainer is patient and consistent. There are many puppy training techniques and advice but how do you decide who to listen to? The basic training commands are kept simple and repeated often. All dog learning is by repetition and by being rewarded for good dog behavior.
A dog's memory span is only a few seconds and the command given must be in that time frame, or the dog will not know why it is being punished, or rewarded. When playing with your pup, do not encourage a behavior that will need to be corrected when it is fully grown. A large dog jumping up is no longer funny and you will confuse your dog when you have to stop this bad dog behavior.
Training includes every aspect of teaching your dog good manners and obedience. The first lessons are usually house training and that begins straight after weaning. The next puppy training techniques are teaching the pup to obey basic commands, followed by leash training and if desired, higher skills when the pup is over six months of age. Most dog obedience schools prefer them to be between six and twelve months.
When house training your pup, confine it to a small area near an outside door, such as the laundry. Cover an area of the floor with newspaper, away from its bed, water and food bowl. Dogs do not like soiling the area where they sleep and eat. When you see the pup using the paper, praise it well. After a few days, the pup should use the paper all the time and if you take note of when the pup relieves itself, you can begin taking it outside.
Take the pup outside after its meals, when it wakes, last thing at night and first thing in the morning. When your pup relieves itself outside, praise it and offer a reward. When the pup is doing this regularly, stop the reward and just give love and praise. Always use the same words when praising and in a softer tone. Encourage the pup to remain on all fours when giving affection and not be jumping all over you.
Remove the newspaper and you will find the pup whining to get out and not wanting to soil its area in the laundry. Accidents will happen and your pup may soil in an area it considers to be outside. Do not punish for accidents, as it is after the event. If you catch the pup in the act, you can say 'No - outside' and take the pup outside and when its finished offer praise again. When your pup has an accident inside your home, it is usually because your schedule has slipped and the consistency of taking the pup outside has not occurred.
Do not believe the old tale of rubbing a dog's nose in it. Your pup will not have any idea why you are doing this and may end up with an undesirable bad behavior. As in all dog and puppy training, use lots of patience and praise the good deeds.
These few puppy training techniques are easy to follow and implement. Give your dog rules to follow and you will have a well behaved pet.
