How to Make Potty Training Doggie Doorbells and Training Your Dog to Use Them

Friday, April 1, 2011

Doggie Doorbells are a good way to teach your dog to let you know that they have to go out side. Once your dog has been properly trained to use the bells, they will not scratch the door or whine at you if they have to go out.

Tools and Supplies

You will need a wide ribbon (1″ wide or more), needle and thread, bells, split rings, a flexible measuring tape, a sewing machine and pinking shears. The pinking shears are important for this project, since they will scallop the edges of the ribbon to prevent fraying.

STEP 1 - Measuring Your Door

Pick the door in your house where your dog will go out to pee. Hang the measuring tape at a place where you would like the bells to hang and make a note of the length.

STEP 2 - Making The Handle

Cut 12″ of ribbon, fold it over and pin it together. Sew a seam with the zig zag stitch about 1/2″ about the ribbon edge

STEP 3 - Cutting The Ribbons For The Bells

Now that the handle is completed, it must be measured since it contributes to the total length of the finished product.

The handle measures 6″ long. The TOTAL length of the finished doggie doorbells that should be 30 inches. So cut the longest ribbon to a length of 24″. The second overlapping ribbon will be cut three inches shorter and the third overlapping ribbon will be cut six inches shorter.

STEP 4 - Assembling The Ribbons For The Bells

Place the ribbons together, starting with the longest one on the bottom. Pin the ribbon handle to the bundle of ribbons so that it looks like this.

Now attach the handle to the ribbons with two separate zig zag seams.

STEP 5 - Attaching The Bells To The Ribbon

Now it's time to sew the ribbons onto the bells. Put the split rings onto the bells and sew a bell onto each ribbon corner like this. Repeat this for all three ribbon ends and you're done!

Training Your Dog To Use The Doggie Doorbells

1 - Place the bells on the door that your dog uses to go out for a pee.

2- Before you open the door to let your dog out, say "go pee" and ring the bells. Make sure that your dog can see and hear the bells ringing. Now open the door and let the dog out. Never use a food reward, since the dog will associate the bell with food and not going outside.

3- Repeat this procedure until your dog rings the bells by itself. It might take a few weeks, but it will be worth it.
