This Mission is Not Impossible - Potty Training an Older Dog

For centuries, dogs have been popular companions of humans for many different reasons. Dogs have the ability to assist in hunting, to protect a home and family, and to provide wonderful companionship to an individual or family. Many dogs are bred from award-winning bloodlines and then, as puppies, placed in loving homes with good owners who properly train and care for the dog, so as to produce a great pet. Unfortunately, not all dogs are this fortunate, and dogs may end up in all manner of bad situations. Many dogs are rescued out of these bad situations and then nurtured back to health by loving, caring people. Some of these dogs are then adopted by families or individuals, but this is not always easy. The dogs often have behavioral problems which require extra energy and correction, such a potty training an older dog.

Potty training dogs is not unlike potty training children. The longer that the dog goes without being potty trained, the more accustomed it gets to doing his or her business wherever is convenient, be it indoors or outdoors. Obviously, this is not a problem for a dog that lives outside, but for those who desire an indoor companion, potty training an older dog may be a necessity. The first truth to understand when embarking on this endeavor is that it is not impossible to teach an old dog new tricks, as the saying goes. The owners (or foster "parents") will be required to make tough decisions and stick to their boundaries and pre-determined consequences, but it is definitely possible to help older dogs with potty issues learn to be a part of the family.

There are many different techniques which can be used for potty training an older dog. Some people use potty pads, some use crate training, and most use some sort of reward system for when the dog actually does its business out of doors instead of inside. The system that is used is perhaps not as important as the consistency in which it is applied. If you start with one system and find that it does not work for you or for your dog, go back to square one and find another system that works for you. There are plenty of resources available via training professionals, books, magazines, and articles, so there is no excuse for not know what to do in order to properly potty train your dog.
