Get to know your dog

There are many articles around claiming to know the secrets of dog training, to find out where you fit in is crucial to making good progress; while there are many good tips out there, however, it is important to find out what is best for you and your dog. One of the first steps in moving forward is to connect with your dog and really get to know all the characteristics, habits, etc. Do not compromise on this important step as it is important from the outset to let the dog know that you are the pack leader and gain the respect of your dog as this is how they think, this will also play a big part on the secrets of dog training and will set the pace in which your dog will learn each task.

Make it fun

Bear in mind that you want to make learning fun, take the time to relax with your dog the last thing you want to do is to have your dog think it's laborious to carry out even the basic tasks. The secret is repetition and prompt reward and then leading to just praising your dog so that the assignment becomes second nature. Before any training takes place, make sure you exercise your dog to burn of excess energy. Remember if you are tense or agitated he/she will pick up on this. Energy levels vary depending on breed for example spaniels and pointers tend to have high energy levels in comparison to say a poodle or Chihuahua, however you will know as each dog is different. Don't be impatient dogs can have bad days as well as good, try to pick a location where it is quiet and without distractions. However it is important to socialize your dog so they get used to people and other dogs maintaining discipline at all times.

Understanding the breed

Over the years dogs have been bred to carry out specific tasks, such herding cattle, hunting/tracking, rescue and pulling sleigh's etc. These breeds would be classed as working dogs as they have been bred for specific purposes this may be the point where we should ask ourselves what it is we require of our dog?, the requirements of our dogs have changed or their capabilities have been depleted as they have been adapted mainly as household pets. Is there a specific task or problem that we want to deal with? Or is your desire just to have companionship by teaching your dog new assignments, no matter how you view things dogs love mental and physical stimulation.

The point I'm making is that certain tasks are going to come natural to your dog depending on the breed and problems that you're experiencing are likely to be lack of understanding of the psychology behind your dog's behaviour.

Once you gain an understanding of the main principles in teaching your dog you will not need to pay for expensive obedience classes. You will know the secrets of dog training.

With all this in mind you have the opportunity to interact with others with similar experiences on your journey. Why not progress fully with the confidence knowing that your getting the best from the experts verified by those who have benefited from this knowledge?
