Potty Training Your Dog 101

Wednesday, March 2, 2011

Potty training your dog is inevitable. Puppies are great pets but sometimes, they can be a great problem especially if they are constantly making a mess inside your house. If you think there's no solution to your problem, them you're quite wrong. Have you considered a crate? Puppies are easier to train than older dogs. Puppies are predisposed to hold their urine and stool while in the crate.

Crate training does just that by allowing your dog to get on a schedule and not to "fail" when you are not at home or are asleep. If you put him in a crate and get him on a schedule, even the most stubborn dog will eventually understand what you want him to do and when. Crate-trained dogs see the crate as a place of safety and relaxation, and(if the crate is the proper size for the dog), they will not eliminate in the crate. If the rug seems to be her target, then placing it in her crate will help her see it as a bed where she can rest and relax.

Praise your dog as soon as it is done going to the bathroom. Don't hold back with the praise and excitement as your dog will pick this up and remember that each time it goes to the bathroom, it will receive praise from you. Praise him to the high heavens when he goes outside. You can also use a treat if you want. Praising a dog in a happy and uplifting tone helps affirm that the dog performed the deed correctly. If the dog hears your affectionate praise it will continue doing the deed right the next time.

Good luck potty training your dog.
