Monday, March 21, 2011

Adopting an aged dog is a very noble, heart warming deed. Unfortunately, along with that act of kindness can come some very difficult tasks. One of which is potty training an older dog. I want to go over some tips that could make this a little less stressful.

Training an old dog is very similar to training a puppy, however it comes with it's own set of special rules.

On that note, let's get on to potty training an older dog. The first tip is:

1. Teaching an old dog a trick is far easier than breaking a habit. Therefor, when house breaking them, it's important to remember to use positive reinforcement to teach them where the appropriate place to eliminate is, rather than negative reinforcements to get them to stop eliminating somewhere.

2. When potty training an older dog, accidents are going to happen... It's inevitable. Cleaning up a dog's mess is important. Make sure you clean it very thoroughly. When choosing your cleaner, choose an ammonia free cleaner. Ammonia resembles the smell of urine and can send your dog mixed signals.

3. On the subject of accidents, it's important to keep in mind that they don't know they've done wrong, and punishing them isn't going to let them know it's wrong. Dogs aim to please, that's why they're our best friends. When potty training an older dog, keep that in mind and let them know that you're pleased, that's what will make your dog start performing these actions consistently.

This is only a couple tips to get you started If you're going through, or will soon be going through this situation, you need to get more info on potty training an older dog here.
