Most of us dog owners would agree that there's no greater joy than owning a dog. And yet, on the flip-side, there's no greater obstacle to that enjoyment than the perennial question of "How do I potty train my dog". Nothing spoils the joy of dog ownership more than clueless dog toilet training that results in unplanned (and smelly!) dog poo (excuse my French!) everywhere.
Here's the thing folks. Potty training your dog is not that hard. Really.
Let's go through the process of dog toilet training with these 5 simple steps --
1. Set fixed times
One of the secrets is setting fixed times for your dog to do his "thing". Ideally, these will be upon your dog waking up, after meals, and before turning in for the night.
Regularizing meal times helps a lot. Remember that your dog needs to go about 15-20 minutes after taking a meal.
2. Signal to your dog that it's time to go
Use the same words every time as a signal to your dog that it's "time" eg "Wanna go poo poo?"
3. Go to the same spot
If you bring your dog to the same spot, he or she will recognize that spot and associate it with doing its business. Everytime.
4. Tell your dog to "do it"
To potty train a dog, the training involved is no different from teaching them simple tricks like "heel" or "fetch". Just as you would tell your dog to do these things with a simple command, so should the act of doing his or her business. This way, your dog knows it has to have "permission". You will avoid unplanned messes if you do this.
Of course, you'll have to pick the words for the command. I personally like "poo poo" but I'll leave the decision on this particular aspect to your personal "taste".
5. Affirm your dog's act
You need to let your dog know that you approve that it's done the right thing. So as soon as it has "gone", praise it, tell him or her "What a good dog you are".
So if you were to ask me "How do I potty train my dog", my answer is to just follow the 5 steps outlined above. To recap, you have to set fixed times for your dog to do his or her business, signal to him or her that it's "time", use the same spot everytime, command your dog to do it, praise him or her when it's all done.
The next time a friend comes up to you to ask "How do I potty train my dog?", remember to share these 5 steps. He's going to be your friend for life for teaching him these simple dog toilet training "tricks".
