Group Puppy Training - Socialize Your Puppy

I happen to really love German shepherds and have had lots of them as pets over the last 35 years, but sometimes they can be a handful-especially if they become biters. I think all of my dogs were great, but I had 2 big males that were very aggressive. I am pretty sure that if either dog had the benefits of group puppy training they never would have developed such aggressive behaviors.

The first of my aggressive dogs loved people, but just hated other dogs.The first dog was already 10 months old when I got him, and his dog hating was already in place when I got him. I solved that problem eventually by introducing my dog to a friendly female dog, who showed him it could be fun to have a doggy friend. After awhile he actually began to tolerate and then enjoy the company of other dogs . It was great that keeping at the socializing worked, and seeing my once-mean dog playing with other dogs was really rewarding. With group puppy training, he would already have been socialized and I could have avoided all this late socializing. Still, better late than never.

Oddly enough, my other big German Shepherd liked other dogs, but really had a problem with people-and that was a much more serious issue. The first time I saw him do anything particularly aggressive he was still very young-just eight weeks old. My puppy and I were in the front yard, doing some gardening, when a UPS delivery van drove up. The driver had a package in his hand and began to walk up to the house.

Before he could reach the door, my little German shepherd pup had his hackles up, and with his teeth bared and barking furiously, he backed the UPS driver back right into the truck. Truthfully, at first I had to laugh, thinking that this little guy already had what it took to be a great watchdog.At the time, I didn't realize what a problem it would later become to control his aggression.

At 6 months of age, my now huge puppy attacked my mailman-knocking him down, but no bites, thank God.My poor mailman sprayed himself-instead of my puppy-with pepper spray. I privately thought it was sort of humorous but the mailman didn't find it so funny. It was awhile before I got any mail after that incident. If think your puppy may be aggressive like my crazy little guy, you'll want to hear my advice about group training to prevent his aggressive tendencies from developing. Owners of larger dog breeds that sometimes tend towards aggression will especially benefit from this advice, although it is still very good advice for any size dog. Dog aggression and biting is something that should be must be corrected as early as possible, because it's much easier to fix it before it has already been happening awhile.

Besides getting your puppy started with his basic obedience training, the puppies get early socialization during break times. By playing and interacting with all the other puppies, your pup will learn that is is fun to hang out with his doggy friends and other people. He will be comfortable around other people and dogs after this socialization and will therefore be less likely to have aggression problems later on.

It is easy to see why it is that a dog that is kept confined and away from interaction with other dogs or people is much more likely to become aggressive.If your puppy is not displaying good social instincts, the other puppies will show him the ropes. This is the natural way for a puppy to learn how to control its behavior. Besides the socialization factor, it is a wonderful idea to begin obedience training your puppy at a very young age. Check out the puppy training classes in your area, and find one using only positive reinforcement techniques.
