Golden Retriever Puppy Training - Is Your Dog Well Behaved?

Thursday, March 24, 2011

Retrievers are the perfect family dog for those who enjoy affectionate and playful dogs. These dogs are witty, intelligent, and easy to train. However, remember that without proper golden retriever puppy training they could also possess that nasty bad behavior. They can also become more frustrating than fun if proper training is neglected.

Training should begin the moment the dog is brought home or better yet as a puppy especially during the first four months. Ensure that your dog socializes with as many people as possible. Mostly, retrievers suffer with anxiety when left alone for some time which may include barking and other destructive demeanor. Let your golden come along with you, go on outdoor trips, have a stroll along busy streets, and the likes.

These experiences will help your pet to be comfortable around humans and this will also form part of their training. Stop their bad behavior by providing your puppies with the proper housebreaking training.

• First, recognize the meaning of your pet's body language such as sniffing or circling around where he is.
• Every time after eating or drinking of water, bring your pet outside, to the spot you want them to permanently use as a toilet.
• Every time they do it right praise your dog, more preferably reward them with anything so that they can associate the act of eliminating outdoors as a positive experience.
Train your pet for obedience to avoid bad behavior and to develop good listening habits when instructed.
• Always do the training inside the house where they live. Your dog will learn faster in a familiar environment.
• During every training session make sure to give new tricks or commands. This is a good way to let them understand and get familiar with the new tricks better and faster. But do not forget to review previous lessons taught to him / her also.
• Do the training in short periods but frequently, as they get easily bored. Better yet, end the training when the retriever is still in the "wanting more" state to make him / her look forward for the next session.
Another part of puppies training is to discourage jumping behavior.
• To discourage dogs from jumping on the owner every time they come home is to avoid patting the dog when he / she does that, instead look away with folded hands till the dog calms down.
• Give a strong command of "Down" together with raising the knees if jumping persist. Normally as a reflex dog's will back away and stop.
• It is important to teach them the basic command such as sit, stay, and down.
• Be consistent in repeating the process and continue praising him every time he does something good.

But most of all, enjoy and have fun with your golden retriever puppy training and allow a stress-free moment with your dog.
