General Information On Dog Obedience Training

Monday, March 7, 2011

Obedience training is extremely essential for a dog. There are a few commands that it must know so that you are free from any unruly behavior. But training is not that simple. You need to very patient and very regular. Consistency is the key to good training technique. If you take too many breaks during the training the dog might fall into bad habits and breaking those are very difficult. Also clarity during training is very important. If you are training your dog not to sit on the furniture or climb on the bed but you allow it to do so at some time or another then you are creating a sense of ambiguity and the dog will not be able to understand what it is that you want.

You must also use positive reinforcements when training your pet. Yelling, shouting and punishing are usually a strict No-No. The reason for this is that the more you yell and shout the less the dog will trust you. If for some reason you hit or beat up your pet it will grow to be suspicious of you. A suspicious dog might turn on you when it gets older and attack you in, what it feels is, self-defense. This is therefore quite dangerous for you. Positive reinforcements are a form of conditional training. It means that any good behavior that it shows can be rewarded. These rewards can be in the form of edible treats or encouraging words. In most cases the training is most effective if you use a combination of both. If it does not behave in the manner you wanted you need to let it know that by a stern toned "NO" and the only punishment you can give is to withhold the treat.

An effective way of training is to use an auditory prop like a clicker. The clicker emits a click sound that can be used to define the exact act that is expected. Like when you are teaching the dog to sit, as soon as it's behind touches the floor you must click the clicker and the treat should follow. This way the sound is associated with good behavior and treats and this is a technique that has been found to be most effective. The dog finds it easier to connect the act, sound and treat rather than most conventional techniques wherein it is not exactly sure what act brought on the reward.
