Four Easy Steps to Potty Train Your Dog

The best time to potty train your dog is when he is very young, the younger the better.

Although I will discuss by training older dogs below, it is definitely more difficult to do and should be avoided, if possible.

First of all you need to remember that young puppies usually eat or drink as often as every 15 to 20 minutes, and each time they do it usually results in some form of elimination. So the easiest way to train your dog is to act with anticipation. Here's the plan:

1-Take your dog outdoors (watch him carefully, check for results, and leave him there until he's done)

• soon after he awakes in the morning
• immediately after breakfast
• immediately after launch
• immediately after any naps
• immediately after dinner
• immediately after any big snacks
• just before bedtime
• if he whimpers during the night

Always praise him for good results

2-Don't feed him or give him water unless you can take him outside immediately.

If you are in a very hot climate, use your own good judgment.

3-If he has an accident, just clean it up, never yell or punish your puppy.

4-Especially at home, keep your dog with you whenever possible

It is important to remember that during this process you are building your relationship with your dog. Doing so in a loving manner will benefit you both.

Although it might not work for every dog I believe it's worthwhile to give your dog the command "go Potty" just before or as they are eliminating. It's nice to be able to teach your dog to go quickly during lousy weather.

Potty training is not fun, but try to do something to keep yourself entertained while watching your dog. It could be anything from deep breathing exercises to pulling a few weeds out your garden.

Remember that puppies gain control of their elimination at different times. If you get your puppy when he is eight weeks old you can expect him to have accidents for a month or two. But all dogs are different and a lot will depend on your training.

Older dogs are much more difficult to potty train, since they have established some bad habits It's okay to use the same routine listed above for puppies, but you will need lots more patience. He has established a habit that allows him to be rewarded for eliminating in the house.

Your only way to deal with this is to prevent your dog from peeing or pooping in the house. You must keep the dog in a fenced yard, outside pen or a crate when you're not home. There is one advantage to dealing with adult dogs however, they don't need to go out as often, their habits are a little more predictable, and they rarely need to go in the middle of the night.

So that's what you need to do, it's not rocket science. Anticipation is a big part of it, and accidents will happen. A little understanding and patience will go a long way to help you and your dog develop a healthy relationship.
