Caesar Millan springs to mind, whenever I hear dog whisperer mentioned, this is of course because he is the front runner in this unique form of behavioral conditioning for both dog and owner. The more I watch of Caesar and his clients, the more I realize its more about the Humans changing. With this completed, the dog can do nothing but follow.
Having watched several series of dog whisperer, I can`t help but admire the devotion and expertise Caesar Millan dedicates to his craft.
His calm and authoritative approach sometimes leaves me speechless with the results he achieves in such a short time span.
More often than not a behavior pattern is corrected in a matter of minutes and often instantly.
Caesar explains that our dogs require balance, and that a dog in the world of dogs has this balance (as in a pecking order) administered by the pack leader. We humans more often than not try to humanize our dogs, thus taking the balance out of their lives, and without this balance and the resulting lack of boundaries a dog can become a little confused and possibly dangerous
Regaining Control/Balance/Boundaries
Its a game of wills and an altered mental attitude on the part of the human, the quicker you can lose that idea your dog is human then the quicker you can begin to enjoy life with your canine. Your dog needs you to be pack leader, and if your not then he`s going to try and step into those shoes, and the next thing you know, he`s top dog and calling the shots.
Caesar mentions three important steps that the owner(human) needs to exercise daily to ensure a wonderful and rewarding relationship between a man/woman and his/her best friend...his/her dog.
- Walk your Dog: This is where the bonding between you and your dog is most crucial. Dogs love to walk, that's what they like to do! You need to walk off that pent up energy that a dog will have after prolonged time periods indoors. This is very important, a dog with lots of energy and no outlet can be more than a handful, so regular walks are a must.
- Feed your dog: always feed your dog after his walk, he will be more content with a full stomach having already had his exercise.
- Love your dog: Having followed the first two steps, this step should just fall into place. A happy well exercised and fed dog will be ready to accept all the love you can give and will reciprocate accordingly.
Leadership:
Our dogs love us and look for leadership, a dog who does not receive this direction and leadership will often mis-behave. There are no boundaries and the dog runs amok, and no matter how much screaming and shouting at our dog we do, the less likely our dog is going to take any notice of our wishes. This is because all we`re really doing is heightening our dogs level of aggression, angst or nervousness.
We need to take control in a quite yet assertive manner, reclaiming all The areas in our home that our dogs have laid claim to.
Then we can set about laying down boundaries for our dogs.
State Of Mind:
In order to achieve this leadership status we need to turn our thinking around. We have a dog and not a human.
Dogs live in the now, they don`t think about what happened yesterday or what flavour meal they are going to get tomorrow, they live in the NOW.
Dogs don`t rationalize, they are mostly pure instinct. For instance; The dog that barks like crazy at the postman is exercising his Territorial instinct. Given time and some training a dog can be shown that the postman is of no threat to his territory and the behavior will desist. The dog is happier because he now no longer has to exercise that behavior (which is stress full), you will be happier because the dog is not making your ears bleed and even happier is the postman, one less potential threat in his life.
Change your thinking, learn about your dogs natural instincts and work with them.
Follow through
If you are going to attempt any correctional behavior program on your own, it is imperative you go through with it and not do it half heartedly. Your dog can sense if you are scared or apprehensive and react accordingly, so prepare yourself for being pack leader,( calm but assertive, using few words)Let him know who`s Boss. If you feel your dog may react violently toward you or anyone else in your family whilst embarking on a behavioral correction programme, then leave it to a professional to show you
The bottom line here is this;
"Dogs are much happier being dogs", than humans. When you treat your animal in a way that facilitates its natural state the happier it will be. This does not mean you can`t show it love and play with it, what it does mean is, our dogs need to have a place in the pecking order, and that place is below any other human in your family.
When this is established, you and your Dog will find a new lease of life and happiness together.
