Dog Training Tips - What is Dog Whispering?

Sunday, March 6, 2011

Of late, there has been a lot of loud selling on all kinds of whispering - horse whispering, dog whispering and even ghost whispering. For most of us, the term Dog Whisperer is associated with Cesar Milan, because we've seen him on TV. But what most people don't know is that the term dog whispering was not coined by him. So that brings us back to the basic question - what is dog whispering all about?

The term comes from horse whispering, where certain trainers had the ability to get a horse to submit to training simply by whispering to it, as opposed to using the more punitive methods of dominance. This ability to whisper to an animal and get it to obey though, is not one of those bizarre gifts that you might associate with Dr. Dolittle. Dog whispering is all about spending in years studying dogs, their body language, their moods, their responses, learning how to read them and then responding accordingly.

While there are a whole bunch of people out there calling themselves whisperers, most of them do not know or understand the art for what it is. It's true that Cesar Milan has a huge following a whole lot of dog-owners who swear by him, but there have also been a lot of concerns about his methods that involve alpha rolling dogs, lifting them off the ground etc. which many trainers say cause injury to dogs.

In fact, most people who call themselves whispers, indulge in some form of training that is in fact the very opposite of dog whispering. While dog whispering is about getting a dog to listen to you, it is also about the way in which you get it to listen. True dog whisperers, know how to get a dog to respect, love and trust them first. This they do by spending a lot of time and efforts into knowing the dog, how it responds and responding accordingly. It does not happen overnight and it's a lot like a relationship - it takes nurturing and hard work.

But once the trust and respect is gained, the dog whisperer is an instant success with the dog. And that's what authentic dog whispering is all about - getting to the basics and understanding that dogs are essentially pack animals and will respond to anyone who establishes himself as the pack leader. And it only takes common sense to realize that dogs that are pack leaders, do not use shock collars and other inhumane methods to get the pack to obey.

So while there is all the excitement surrounding whisperers, if you want to know what real dog whispering is all about, just spend more time understanding dogs and your pet specifically!
