Dog Potty Training Techniques

Wednesday, March 2, 2011

One great way of making sure that your dog is potty trained is to use different kinds of potty training tools. In this article I'll be talking about general potty training techniques for your dog as well as how you can use pads to make the process easier.

To start with you should remember that it's completely natural for your dog to go to the toilet in the house when you first get it as a puppy because it doesn't know any better. While dogs are generally quite clean animals and don't like to soil their own living areas, to the dog its bed is a living area and the house a potential toilet!

Because of this it is vital that you never punish your dog for going to the toilet in the house but instead you need to use positive training techniques to praise it when it goes outside.

If your dog does have an accident inside that it is important to clean it up correctly because dogs like to go to the toilet in places that they've been before. If your puppy can smell that it has been to the toilet in a certain area of the house then it is much more likely to go there again.

You can use a training pad by getting your dog to go onto the pad and then slowly moving the pad towards the door of the house. Gradually you can move the pad outside and keep praising your dog whenever it uses it. In this way your dog will soon know that it has to go to the toilet outside and you can then remove the pad completely.
