Calling All Dog Owners

Whether you have a Lab, a Beagle, a Boxer, a Pug, or even a Portuguese Water Dog the need to have a well trained, well mannered dog is universal. No one wants their dog to jump up on strangers walking down the street or on guests coming through the front door. How embarrassing is it when your dog doesn't listen to you? Dog training doesn't have to be difficult or costly.

Puppy Obedience Training - Start When They're Still Puppies

The best results are obtained when obedience training starts early in a dogs life. If you and your pet start off on the right foot by training each other early then problems later in life may be avoided. Start by using these few simple techniques and your puppy will learn the rules of their world. Soon you and your pet will be getting along greater than ever. Don't let your new puppy learn to chew up your shoes, your pens, or your child's costly retainer!

One great way to stop dog jumping behavior is to never even encourage it from the moment you bring your puppy home. You may not realize it but by petting your new puppy when they get up and stand on only their hind legs, you are encouraging jumping behavior. Be careful to let them know it is OK to be friendly, just force them back down immediately and then reinforce that behavior instead. Never, ever, get angry or use a harsh tone with your new pet as that will discourage the friendly behavior and may make them scared of you.

Dob Obedience Training - Correct Mistakes

If your dog has already become comfortable with terrible habits and embarrassing actions it isn't too late. You can learn dog training techniques which will help you fix these bad behaviors. Does your dog barking incessantly at the neighbors drive you and them mad? Many dogs bark at windows, fences, and other barriers. I even know a one that barks at the rain and jumps up biting the sky!

When you're there to observe the behavior you can begin to correct the problem. Check what the dog is barking at, and when you're satisfied it's not a threat, back up and call him to you. Praise him, pet him, and perhaps give him a cookie or take on a game of ball. As is taught in most obedience classes, always make your pet very happy when he comes to you. Be sure to always praise first, and if he will respond to petting, do that too. The praise and attention switches him into a different drive, and is very useful in improving this behavior.

After reward, release him. If he goes back to barking, call him again and give all the same happy rewards you did before. You might have to call him several times in a row to get this new obedience training technique to sink in. Over time though, you will see a vast improvement, needing to call him only once or twice, and noticing that he doesn't bark as long, or work himself up so much.

You will have interrupted his adrenaline high from barking, which is probably addictive to dogs. Without this kind of intervention, barking at barriers tends to escalate, and can lead to other problems, such as turning and snapping at another dog or person who is standing nearby, out of frustration.
