There are many options for any dog owner to look at when it comes to training their dog or puppy. It is a good idea to have a firm view of how you will go about training your dog before you even get him or her home.
Options include

  • Self Training (doing it from home)
  • Professional house call
  • Puppy school

In this article we will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each

Self Training
The most common option, most people choose to train their dog in their own time from home. Unless you are breeding your dog to enter him/her into dog shows of become a working dog this is probably the best option for you.

There are many advantages to home schooling your dog.

Dogs are pack animals and their instinct is to follow the instructions of the pack leader. Training your dog from home is great as it reinforces to the dog that you are the alpha dog or pack leader. They will become comfortable taking directions from you and get to know your voice.

However this option is somewhat flawed. Most people don't know the first thing about training a dog. Never fear there is help out there are some great recourse guides out there that step you through the basics of raising an obedient well mannered dog. Using positive reinforcement and proven techniques developed by professionals. Which can be implemented at any time at your own leisure.

Professional House Call
This method involves hiring a professional dog trainer to come to your home and train the puppy in a very structured way with you showing you exact techniques you can implement in between sessions.

This is also a great way for the dog to be reminded of who is the leader of the pack and respond to you directly. Your dog will fell comfortable as you are not removing it form its familiar surroundings.

This method is considerably more expensive than self training. Especially when the same advice can be obtained a fraction of the price in the many available books and courses that one can buy. It is also time constrictive, as you will need to set aside time each week for the trainer to visit.

Puppy School
This technique involves taking your puppy or dog to formal classes. Where they will be taught obedience training in a group environment. This is a good way to socialise your dog also.
A good way to stop your dog from barking and growling at other dogs is to keep them social from a very early age. This will condition them to seeing other dogs and walk time will be much more pleasant.

Of course puppy training can be expensive and if you have a local park or walking track with other dogs it is easy to socialize them in your everyday routine.

Another drawback of puppy training is, because you go to a special place as a special time to learn obedience with your dog they can sometimes think that that is the only time they are expected to behave and can run rings around you the rest of the time.

Conclusion
Getting the right advice and training you puppy from home is the best way to raise an obedient well mannered dog. Asserting your dominance over them in a positive way, from an early age, using tried and tested dog obedience training techniques will reap the greatest reward.

Whichever track you decide to go down do it early and stick to your guns. I have provided a link to a great recourse about Dog Training
