DIY Dog Training 101

Tuesday, March 1, 2011

Are you frustrated with your dog, is he/she disobedient and misbehaved? Well if your answer is yes that you're in the right place. So how do you get your dog to listen to you? Well there are a few strategies that work really well, here they are.

Communicating

First and foremost you have to establish communication with your furry friend. There are three different types of dog communication tones, good dog tone, bad dog tone, and command tone. When your dog does a "good" action you should communicate that to your dog by saying something like "good boy", or "good job". Alternatively, if your dog has done something bad, you should communicate with your dog in a deep serious tone, and say "bad boy". The last form of dog communication is the command tone, this tone requires you to speak sharply and clearly so that you demonstrate to the dog that you have the authority and he/she does not. The command tone should be used only when giving him/her a command like "sit" or "lay down". After establishing good communication you are ready to move onto the next step. You're Dog's Name By now your dog obviously has a name, however he/she may not yet react to his/her name being called. This can be achieved very easily by following the following strategy. Get your dog and put a leash on him so that he/she doesn't move away. Next, say your dog's name and lightly tug the leash toward you. When he/she looks in your direction sue your "good dog voice" and say good dog. Continue doing this exercise until he/she looks at you without you having to tug on the leash. After achieving this, your dog will be ready to move onto learning simple commands.

Basic training

Basic training is where you start to teach you dog basic commands like "sit", "lay down", and "shake". Basic training is best achieved by combining words with an action. For example, to teach your dog to sit you should say the word "sit" and demonstrate the action to him/her. For more stubborn dogs, you may move him/her gently to demonstrate the position you want him/her to be in. When your dog performs the command successful you should reward him with the "good boy voice". Keep practicing even after this until your dog preforms the command instantly. If your dog does not listen to you don't give up, teaching your dog a command can take up to a few weeks sometimes. You have to be patient. Basic training though is no good if your dog is unhealthy.

Diet and Exercise

What you feed your dog and how often he/she exercises is just as important as training him/her tricks since a healthy dog is a happy dog. An unhealthy, overweight dog will have trouble learning basic commands, has less energy, and is much less happy and obedient. To keep your dog healthy you must feed him/her healthy food, and take him on regular walk of about.5 miles - 1 mile about 5-7 times a week. Exercise will keep him/her full of energy and happy.

Conclusion

Now that you have established communication with your dog, taught your him/her the name, and giving him/her some basic training your dog should be well behaved, more friendly, and obedient.
